I was just wondering if anyone adds any new substrate to there tank through out the year. I thought of this today while doind tanks maint. I vaccum my substrate every week and when I do I loose a little bit of substrate, not much but after awhile it adds up. I have been in this house and these tanks have been up a year and I have never added anything since I have been here. Its not looking like I need to add anything right now, but wanted your input on this.

I have gravel in all but one of my tanks, so no. The one tank I have the large crushed coral in, I'm sure I get a little sand every time, but haven't ever been able to notice a difference yet. Would be probably take 100 years before it all turned to sand!

I had sand in my mbuna tank for a while, but too many scratches and they moved it too much. So, I switched to the larger crushed coral. I'll try sand again when I start my salt/reef tank, or maybe the finer aragonite.

I don't add for any particular reason, nor do I remove either. I add if I want a change for plants or to a finer or courser bed, but not because of removing it via water changes and deterioration. Most of my tanks are bare bottom though.

im like Rick most of my tanks are bare btm but i have had to add a little to my 125 that has crushed coral before but it has been set up for several yrs. Chris at the critter told me he has to add crushed coral some times to his tanks( he keeps it in the sumps ) guess i will find out about the sand when i set up some of the tanks in my new room will have blk sand

I think the Critter adds it for pH. It will eventually stop buffering, so you have to add new.

Add new, or replace all, if being used for buffering ?

I talk to chris about this for a while and he said he has to add it to replace what melts away as the water in the sumps moves over it so fast and yes it mainly to keep his ph up for the africans not all his tanks has it.
