My name is Tabitha I live in Nashville. I've been keeping fish most of my life, including cichlids which I no longer have. This is the only Tennessee forum I've found so I will ask my question--does ANYONE have experience trimming puffer teeth? I have a South American Puffer. He is small and freshwater. I wouldn't have gotten him, but my ex did when he had the tank and now I have the tank back with the SAP which he did not research before buying. He's friendly and great but I don't want his teeth to get too big and have him starve to death. They are already pretty big but he's still eating. I can't seem to keep enough snails in the tank and I have put ghost shrimp in which he likes but I don't think their shells are crunchy enough. Help please!!

Welcome!
Wish I could help but that's beyond anything I have experience with. Maybe someone else can help.

If teeth are not to bad off you can freeze whole shrimp and feed while frozen with shell. Also other crustaceans with hard shells. If you actually have to file them, where gloves and put a little stress coat on them, hold fish firmly in hand and gently file with a file. It won't take too long, but it might stress fish to death.

Shellfish and/or snails are a requirement for a puffer. As long as he is still eating he should be ok from my experience with a Green Spotted Puffer.
We gave our GSP snails and shrimp and never had feeding issues. I have read that they can over eat so I would be careful giving it too many snails to file the beak.
Never had so much fun watching something eat then putting a snail in the GSP tank and watching that cute little thing hover, then attack with a furry.

Yeah I am aware of the snail diet and all (hence when I said I cant seem to keep enough snails in the tank), if you read about SAP's the problem is there is pretty much no way around trimming their teeth. It can be done with a cuticle clipper. And he can eat but they are bad off. My problem is I need someone who can trim them. I really don't want to do this myself because I don't want to kill the little guy. So if ANYONE knows of ANYONE with experience doing so, I will pay them. Please let me know. Till then I will wait. And I would love to read more on this forum I love seeing other fish lovers in the area. I wish I still had my cichlids. I plan on filling one of my empty 10 gals with a couple of shell dwellers. The other 10 I want to put a betta and some ADF's (but ADFs are trouble as far as feeding them) in a planted tank. My current tank is planted and I love it, I have amazing lighting though. Ayways thanks everyone! Please let me know if you find anything out.

That will fix your problems As I said above--They still need a teeth trimming, they have some of the fastest growing teeth for a puffer. Everyone who owns them say they have to trim them once a year. His teeth are def too big right now for a crawfish plus the little guy is only an inch long as it is. So if anyone knows anyone please help. Aquatic Critter was no help.

I responded how. Be gentle, get a file for nails, and gently rub teeth until they are how you want them. There should be articles online if you need more in depth advice.

Really what I need is someone who has done it before and I can pay them to do it for me. I'm aware of all the ways to do it and that they are supposed to eat snails and shellfish and such. I just need a fish owner or fish vet in the area to actually do it. I really don't want to do it myself. If you know anyone who can, please let me know.

I'm also very aware of all the advice and vids on the internet. But what I asked was does anyone know how or know of anyone with experience doing it? I do not want to do this myself. I would like to pay an experienced person to do it. This is why I joined a forum based in my area. I figured some fish keeper would help me. I know what to do, but i'm scared of killing him. If anyone hears or knows of anyone please let me know. Till then, believe me I've done my research and know what is necessary to raise the puffer (who I wouldn't have bought, I just ended up with him obviously). I know about food requirements for filing teeth. I've seen vids of puffers having their teeth clipped. I JUST NEED SOMEONE TO DO IT. PLEASE HELP.

Oh, sorry, I thought you were going to try. I have done it, but I don't think I could do it on someone elses pet. If you need a last resort person, I will help.

In small cities, people suffer from repressed lust. That is, in small cities without a brothel.
