We recently got a Axolotl and are looking for some tips and advice for getting the water cooled off. Are there any home remedies anyone knows of. Of course the chillers ( = expensive ) and the simpler methods of frozen water bottles and fans. Right now we have it in a 46 gallon bow front tank and the temperature is staying at 71.

What is the desired constant temperature?

The colder the better. Any where maintained in the 60's is good but the lower 60's being being better.

Water that is moving tends to be cooler than stagnant water.

Yeah that would be difficult without a chiller.

Any chance of finding a cheap mini fridge on Craigslist that will fit under the stand?

Well we have gotten down to 68-69 by using fans. I have seen were people have used mini fridge and wine chillers. We was hoping not to go to that extreme. I would like to keep as simple as we can. Is is pretty wild seeing some of the set ups that people use.

I can see the fridge thing working if you find a way to seal the holes around the tubes so cold air is not escaping/wasted.

The only other thing I can think of using is a peltier cooler (great for cooling computer CPUs ), but that may get too cold. The peltier could be connected to a cheap heater core and instead of a fridge you loop the water through the heater core that is now cooled by the peltier. You would also need to attach a computer heatsink and fan to the other side of the pelier as they get hot.
