I recently lost an older yellow lab. He started with a small knot under his eye and it grew over several months to where the whole side of his head was swollen and the eye was bulging. I was thinking tumor of some type. Any ideas? No one else in the tanks has shown any health issues.

Hard to say for sure. I'm not an expert on fish medications or growths/disease, but sounds like it could be caused by some sort of parasite.
Best thing to do is take the steps to prevent it in the future...more frequent water changes, less feeding, etc.

I was thinking of some kind of tumor. Any ideas? No one else in the tanks showed any health problems.
