Came across a 220-gallon tank for sale and called the guy. Said it was originally a reef tank that was converted to a cayman tank. No breaks in glass but leaks in one place under the silicone about 10 inches from the top. He said it probably would need to be taken apart and all the glass put back together. Anyone ever do this? I wouldn't even attempt it, but this might be a way for me to get hold of a big tank at a very reasonable price. I'd have plenty of time to get it sorted since I wouldn't set it up until I find out where I'm moving to. Are there places where you can take a tank like this and have it re-done and feel secure about it?

Mike, I have seen a few personal business cards on the front desk at the Critter. I never took any home with me but there were a few that advertised they resealed tanks. Wouldn't hurt to try calling the Critter and ask if they know someone.

All you have to do is strip off the old, and clean- then reapply new silicone. Get GE silicone I, it is nontoxic. Its not hard and you shouldn't have to take apart.

Jon I wondered why the guy said take it apart when it only leaks in one place. Guess he was just trying to be extra cautious. He said there are no cracks in the glass.

When they make a tank they do two silicone jobs. One is to put it together, and one is to seal it. All you should have to remove is the seal part that is what you see on the inside. Then clean then reseal. If he doesn't have it for next to nothing then I would not get it. Resealing a tank that size will be some work and money in silicone. I have resealed quite a few, and the silicone will do a number on your brain cells.

I know the guy and the tank. I think it would be a ton of work to do. I would avoid it. The tank and stand were in rough shape.

Yeah, I already decided not to get it. Just too many warning bells going off. He sent me a couple of pics, but it was standing on end in a darkened room so I couldn't tell much about it. Great price, though, and they were willing to deliver from Nashville to Tullahoma and unload it for $75 (or $50 if I unloaded it). Still, sometimes it's best to go with your gut, and my gut was telling me no. When I get my house situation settled, there will be other deals.

For $50 I might do it if I were you- the glass is worth more than that.
