Had myself a very nice day. Drove to Bellvue and picked up a 45 gallon tank with stand, bags full of goodies and about 20 or so fish including some big ole Silver Dollars.
And, it was all free.
I've been keeping an eye out for a big tank. I saw an ad on Craig's List that for a tank "45 inches deep." Now, I knew that wasn't accurate, but figuring it could be a big tank of some sort, I e-mailed the lady and asked for a picture. She sent one along with some dimensions her teen-aged son had taken for her. The 45 inches was gone, but the dimensions were very strange just the same...lol....finally, from looking at the pic, I was pretty sure it was a 45. I e-mailed her back the next day with a thank you for the pic but told her I was really looking for a bigger tank and wished her luck. She e-mailed me back and said she would give me the tank if I would come and get it. She needed it out of the way for new flooring going in the room, and her husband just got a new job traveling and wasn't able to take care of it anymore.
After she assured me I wasn't taking advantage of them, I still wasn't sure I would take the tank since I would have to rent a truck or van to retrieve it. Called a friend of mine in the car business today to see what it would cost to rent the vehicle, fully expecting it to be $50 to $100, which meant I would probably call the lady and tell her I'd try to find someone else (one of you guys) to take the tank since I wasn't really looking for one tha size. My friend told me if I did it today instead of tomorrow, he would let me have a mini van for free. I figured it was just meant for me to have this tank.
The neatest thing, other than meeting the lady and her kids, was a huge piece of driftwood in the tank. If he bought this at the Critter, which is where he did a lot of his shopping, this thing had to have cost more than $100. It weighs a ton, and as you can see from the photo below, it stretches across a good bit of the 36 inch tank. That alone was well worth the drive.
Now, I have the center piece for the big tank I'm going to get one of these days. Meanwhile, since I already have a 45 in addition to the one I got today, I'm already envisioning building a stand and setting them side-by-side when I get my house situation settled later this summer. If I do it right, it could be beautiful.
Anyway, this is very long winded, but I think it's worth mentioning when you meet nice people and have nice things happen to you. And, this was a very nice day.
