I got 2 of these guys at the ACA. Very unique little fish. They are snail eaters in nature and all of the Paretroplus are highly endangered or completely extinct in the wild. These are still small and will get nice red highlights as they grow.

Yes. both of the Madagascar fish that I really wanted were there. The others went for $200 for a bag of three though.

Lol, I knew when Jon got those at the auction they would be at your house shortly!!
I'm mainly interested in the paretrolplus group. Someday maybe I have have a big tank dedicated to them. That will be a long time down the road though.

They've proven to be difficult. There's not much information easy to find on the web. The paratilapia are supposed to be nasty only to their own kind so I thought it might be the same with them but no dice. Have an extra polleni and put the two new ones in with her but the bigger one attacked her. Separated them and he attacked the smaller one. Put the smaller one in with the paratilapia and gave both sides dither fish and the smaller one drove the paratilapia into hiding. How do they live together in the wild?! It's a challenge.

Madagascar cichlids require about 5X the space of SA/CA cichlids. They all seem to hate there own kind unless you have large groups. They just need a really sparcely stocked tank. Go to the TN aquarium and you will even notice this in there Madagascar display. It has about 8 fish in a several hundred gallon setup.

The writings on paratilapia polleni do state that they are mean to their own kind, except for maybe a mate, but they also say they don't seem to spawn in a large tank. But I do think someone spawned them in a pond. They will spawn in a very small space, though. Picking their brains is no easy task. And that's just the one kind. I now need to learn some things about the new kind. They're so fascinating, yet mean to the max. My one polleni girl eats out of my hand, though and the bigshot male that runs over everything is too afraid so he has to wait for his food. Girl power! Don't imagine the new guys will ever get that friendly.

I wish I knew more about Madagascars, but I won't pretend like I do. All that I have seen are stunning, but as Angel said, its hard to find good info.

Beautiful fish JD, and they seem to be settled from the move. Are they getting along? What sort of setup do you have them in?

They started fighting after about a week together. I have the one pictured with a bunch of grow out fish for pairs and my largest growouts from some fry.
The other is in with some SA cichlids.
There is a breeder in Texas that hopefully will have spawn soon that I hope to get 6 more from.

JD, I got my polleni mail order. The only mail order I ever did. My review on it is mixed, because I also got two trams and they got stressed and died but it might be that particular fish is not good to ship because my polleni all three are doing wonderfully months later. In any case, the business is Cichlid Station and the reason I'm telling you is, he has those fish. I have no idea what you paid for them but here's his link. www.cichlidstation.com/servlet/the-*-Cichlids%2C-Madagascar/CategoriesI just am not in a position to pay $70 a fish. But he's been nice following up to see how the fish are doing and such. Looks like the link needs copied and pasted. The asterisk breaks the string.

That is probably a fair price. But those almost certainly came from the breeder in texas becuase he is the only person I know of with a breeding colony in the US that is selling any. I should be able to get some 1" fish for much cheaper then that on the next spawn.
