Cool. That's the one I have. Love it. Doesn't your Nikon have commander mode so you don't need to buy the pocket wizard? It's built in to most models now. Just trying to save you some money in case you werent aware of that. Commander mode works great and you don't need any other hardware to mess with to fire one or more speedlights remotely. Does the D70 have this commander mode? and how much was your flash Jon? D70 DOES have commander mode. see www.momentcorp.com/review/nikon_d70_commander_mode.html

Cool, I guess the D90 is the same. The manual sucks.

In commander mode, it seems my on camera flash has to shoot as well. Is this true?

Yes, but the on-camera flash is used only to trigger the remote flash. It shoots at very low power and it isn;t used as the source of light for your photo - the remote flash does that.

My flash stuff comes in today, so I might have some new pics tomorrow that are decent. The ones I posted the other day were without a flash and it never comes out as sharp, and I have to bump my iso so it looks a bit grainy. I tried commander mode, but with the way I like to shoot, commander flash did impact photo enough to make me want to use wizard.
I like for light to be 100% directly over fish with nothing coming from front to illuminate background. I couldn't do commander mode in a way that kept a noticable amount of light from hitting the front. I did get it where there was not any flash bounce back.

From what i was told Glen thats what triggers it but the light from the flash is so little its just enough to trigger sensor, but wont effect the pic.

I'm curious if you set the on camera flash to the "--" (off) setting rather than TTL or "M" when in commander mode. If you do that, there's very little light emitted and it's not likely to noticeably effect your photo. I've also seen people rig a little strip of paper in front of the on camera flash to direct the light up and away from the subject. That's a lot cheaper than an electronic remote system for those of you that can't get the effect you're after in commander mode.

From what i was told Glen thats what triggers it but the light from the flash is so little its just enough to trigger sensor, but wont effect the pic. With a strobe rigged up in a bounce box, your camera's flash triggers it to fire. You'll need to manually set your on camera flash's output if you want reduce its contribution of light to the photo. Your camera does not know the strobe is present, so it will try to provide all the light for the shot with its pop up flash. A bounce box takes more knowledge of your camera to dial in the right exposure than a remote flash running in commander mode. In commander mode, your camera tells the flash how much light to shoot out. With a strobe in a bounce box, the strobe will always pump amount the same amount of light so you have to adjust your camera settings to it. But either way, you'll get lots of great light to work with and your photos will be much brighter and clearer.
