Thanks, I read through the whole thread and only saw answers to local shops and such. I was more interested in the ponds and other places one might be able to find stuff. I have seen stuff like anacharis up north. All I found here so far was pennywort.

Local streams and creeks have several different types of native hardy plants, but most found are bog plants.
You must be very careful about bringing in critters that could harm your aquarium inhabitants though. Can't say I am to familiar with locations that might have submerged plants for aquariums though.
Prob. a few around, but not sure where.
We members on here who have ponds in our back yards may have some of the floating type plants you might be interested in. Tell us what types you are hoping to find, and a member here might very well tell you they have it growing in their backyards.
Also, the greenhouse location in Fairview mentioned previously, has lots and lots of plants that can be used in aquariums, if you really want to stay local, but they used to close for the winter about the end of Oct., so you better decide soon if you want to pay them a visit. Call ahead this time of year for open times.
They supply many of the local fish and pet stores that are not chain stores.
I was @ the Critter yesterday and they have a pretty good selection right now also. They do not always have a large selection, but do right now. Pay them a visit. If you do, tell them you have been directed there via the club. If you become a member here, you will get a 10% discount there also.

I now have finally heard back from them.
They are the ones who placed the Nash. Craigslist ad.
The ad is corect in listing all the plants, driftwood, rocks, feeds, etc... that they have confirmed they will be bringing.
They say they are located in southern Ala.
They say they have plans to attend the Nash. flea market about every other month.

The local guy above, from Gallatin, that David and Mike found, will not be attending the Nash. flea market until next Spring, 2012, but he is the one who some of you have been seeing there in the past. I spoke with him via phone this a.m.. He welcomes any of you to contact him via ph. or e-mail and visit him for driftwood pieces in Gallatin. Call or e-mail for detailed arrangements.

Yes. Flea Market @ Nashville Fairgrounds. Starts Friday about 8 a.m. and is open Fri., Sat., and Sun..
Glad your off work. You should go by to see this fella. Gonna have numerous live plants, driftwood, several diff. types of rocks including holey rock, fish foods, and who knows what all else.

I sent him an email asking if he would have the Cabomba purple that is listed on his site and he quickly responded they will have everything that is listed on the site plus a lot more. I get my own driftwood from the lakes as well. I always get weird looks when I am dragging wood in behind my kayak.

I had been coming here checking for responses to my post and did not notice it went on to page 2. It was hard to notice the second page.

In response to some of the earlier post responses to me concerning lake plants, I am well aware of cross contamination and risks that go along with taking local species from lakes and rivers. I was looking for some local native plants because I wanted to start a Walstad natural tank and possibly put some local sunfish in there as well. I was blown away at how much color these guys have compared to other sunfish I have seen around the country.

I thought this thread was created by someone asking where they could gather local species, and someone stating that they have gotten some from rivers,lakes and ponds around middle TN

Like I said, when I was in PA this summer I was fishing at a pond and just happened to notice that it was filled with some really nice Anacharis. Had beautiful color and it was huge. I tried to take some but it did not make it from PA down to Charleston SC and back to TN. Maybe next summer.

I was hoping someone had a similar experience somewhere here in TN where they know for sure a certain species is known to be. I cant find much info on native aquatic plants other than nuisance species. Looking at the nuisance list though, I would like to find some Brazilian elodea,Potamogeton crispus L, Myriophyllum spicatum L,Hydrilla verticillata,Najas minor L,Marsilea minuta L. Really I am looking for any free aquatic plant that I can use to experiment with in different setups of mine.

I appreciate all the help from everyone. If anyone can point me in the direction of a better reference for native aquatic plant species it would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, I apologize. I don't know where I got it in my head this thread was created by someone looking for plants in ponds, lakes and rivers. I thought one of the posts said something along those lines. After re reading I see that someone just said that the plants we use in aquarium are also used in ponds.

Went up there Friday morning and got a bunch of nice stuff for a great price. Cool guys. They were not quite ready for me yet but were very helpful and very easy to deal with.

I cant believe they fit all that into a Buick.

I got 2 of the Crinum calamistratum that is just awesome and some Madagascar lace that is going to look great. The cabomba purple is starting to color up nice, but the green I am having trouble keeping in the substrate. A bunch was about 15 one inch pieces.

It will be awesome to see them again in the spring. Might not be able to wait that long since they said they were going to try to work out some if it fits, it ships boxes.
