Adopted this big boy(?) today. Still shy, and doesn't want to eat what I'm offering. The previous owners were feeding it earthworms from the yard.

Nice adoption dennis. That is a girl Jack. They do tend to be pretty shy. Give it sometime and it will settle in. When it gets more comfortable it should darken up a bit and start showing more reds and blues as well.

Dennis just posted two. Hope it's not only by the gills being blue because that's a lot of blue on the supposed boy. But it's way bigger and the fins are longer and pointier. Our fingers are crossed! At least they're sticking together. But if it's a girl we're gonna need a boy! Or two!

Very nice!! That is one big healthy Jack. It is another female though. The way to sex jack is to look at the blue coloration on there face. Males will have almost no blue spots or spangles from there mouth down back to there gill plate. Females have large spangles of blue on the jaw and sometimes even look like they have a blue beard. Go look at a tank of JD's at a store and you will see what I'm talking about.
That's a good looking female though!! Congrats on the nice pickup.

Crap! This pet store had only blue spotty faces. Was hoping because it's a 9" fish it had to be a boy with dressing issues. Oh well...have any boys around? And we'll need a hugemongous tank!

All I have is a Gold JD male and Electric blue JD male. They are both my wifes so they are off limits unless I want to die. You should be able to go to almost any petsmart (or any other pet store) and find a male for cheap. It will not have to be as big as the females. The males are pretty tough and should be able to hang with a bigger female. Anything over 4 inches will be fine.

Our PetSmart has only small ones. Dennis said he'll try the Critter tomorrow afternoon, and he's eyeing my 125 gallon tank! Granted, he's got them in a 55 now and needs something bigger, and I could easily switch with him with all the 55's I've got, but WAAAAAHHH!!!
