How long have you had him, and for how long has he not been eating? Are there other fish in with him? How are they doing? What's his poop look like?

You should note his behavior. It's possible he's being picked on, so look at his fins and scales to see if he's chewed at all. But if he's got white stringy poop like a piece of thread or clear poop then he's sick and you need to get him out and get him treated with metro or clout because these fish get malawi bloat very easily. What have you been feeding him?

Are there any other afras in there? Is he a she? Is her throat swollen? It's always a possiblility she's holding too. Look at his or her body shape. Is the fish swollen at all in the abdomen? And look at its vent. Their vents can be red or be swollen and sticking down a little if they have bloat too.

The pellets wouldn't make him bloat unless he ate too much of course. I'm not really sure about cichlid gold so I'll read up on it. But getting a good look at him and thinking about if you've seen anyone pick on him is kinda important. Get a picture of him if you can.

That's good because if he is sick and you have to take him out of the tank, there's a good chance the others would be ok. If they start not socializing one by one it's a bloat sign. I lost an entire population to what I thought was bloat though and it turned out to be copper poisoning. Let's hope you dont' find a penny in your tank like I found in mine! The people that had that tank before me buried it in the sand. Be sure to let us know what you see when you get him out of the rocks.

I would get a double supply of metro to always have some handy. I would get it at aquatic critter tomorrow, then a back up supply from Big Al's Online- it is way cheaper but takes 5 days to get to you. By then afra will be dead. What size were the cichlid gold pellets? If I were feeding africans hikari I would only feed them excel. If he hasn't eaten in a week he might be in trouble. I usually treat on second day. Keep us posted, and call me if you need anymore help- others may chime in tomorrow.
