If he is alive and getting better than you should be ok. Check out petsmart, they are having a sale on 10g tanks for $12. It is well worth it to have a hospital tank. I would still order the stuff off bigals if you get a chance just to have it handy.

The API should keep things from getting worse- but not strong enough to cure them if its bloat. If you're just using the API and it's bloat he's not gonna get better. Further, Jon's got some 10 gallon tanks for sale cheap. That's all you'd need. But you make your own decision. Your fish will eat if he's feeling better. Until you see him eat, assume he's sick. ok i went up to petsmart today and got a 10g tank with the light and top for like $18 dollars with light bulbs using the pet perks card but when i got home guess what! my afra died rip white top afra, he was getting so pretty too

Did you order the Metro on big als- If you have it handy and can treat at first symptoms, they are fairly easy to save.

Sorry he didn't make it John. We learn in these situations what to look for so next time we do better at saving fish. That's the one good thing .The bad thing is it's tough to put a lot of hours into watching one change and then they die. Hate that!
